Lawn Care
in Westerham
Whether you want to maintain a healthy lawn or rescue a tired one, we work to the lawn's biology, not just a rota. Family-run, fully insured, no long-term contracts.
Westerham sits on the Greensand Ridge, six miles north-west of Sevenoaks but meaningfully different in conditions. Most TN16 lawns sit on a mix of greensand and clay rather than the chalk-clay border you find around Sevenoaks proper. Greensand drains faster, dries out quicker in summer, and tends to be more acidic — which favours moss and sometimes encourages the wrong species of grass to dominate. We diagnose first, treat second.
Elevation matters more in Westerham than people realise. The town centre sits at around 180 metres above sea level — Sevenoaks central is closer to 100. That's enough difference to push the spring start back by a week or two most years, and to bring frost into late April in cold seasons. We don't apply spring feed until soil temperatures are right, which the RHS recommends as around 6°C — in Westerham that's typically late March to mid-April, not early March like in lower-lying areas.
Wind exposure is the other thing that sets Westerham apart. Sitting on the ridge with the Downs to the north and open valley to the south means lawns here dry faster after rain than they do in Sevenoaks valley. That's mostly a good thing — we can often get treatments down within hours of a shower where we'd have to wait a day in town — but it also means lawns stress sooner in a dry summer. Watering deeply and infrequently beats little-and-often on these soils.
Older Westerham properties often have lawns that have been in place for generations. Mature lawns on greensand tend to develop two specific issues over time: thatch build-up that locks moisture out of the soil during dry spells, and gradual depletion of nutrients as the lighter soils leach more readily. If your Westerham lawn looks pale yellow-green rather than rich green by midsummer, the answer is usually a proper iron-based feed combined with scarification — not just more nitrogen.
Like the rest of West Kent, leatherjackets and chafer grubs are common in Westerham lawns, particularly in the older properties around the Green and the village core. Yellow patches that don't recover, soft turf, and increased bird activity (especially crows and magpies pulling at the lawn) are the giveaway signs. We can identify and treat both during regular visits — but the longer they're left, the harder the recovery.
