What's covered in every plan

  • Seasonal feeding
Each treatment is timed to the season — slow-release nitrogen in spring to drive growth, balanced feed through summer, autumn potash to harden the lawn for winter. On Westerham's ridge soils that drain quickly, feed timing matters more than feed quantity — apply too much at once and most of it leaches away before the grass can use it.
  • Weed & moss control
Selective weed treatment that kills broadleaf weeds without harming the grass. Moss control timed for autumn and spring when conditions favour treatment. Greensand soils tend to be slightly acidic, which favours moss growth — we treat the moss and the soil chemistry together, not separately.
  • Scarification & aeration
Once a year minimum on most Westerham lawns. Scarification removes thatch and moss build-up. Aeration relieves any compaction and helps water move through ridge soils more evenly. Done properly, this is what separates a healthy lawn from one that just looks green from a distance.
  • Honest diagnosis
Before any treatment, we tell you what your lawn actually needs — and what it doesn't. If you're already doing the right things, we'll say so. If a problem can't be fixed by treatment, we'll explain why and what would actually work.

Why Westerham lawns need specific care

Westerham sits on the Greensand Ridge, six miles north-west of Sevenoaks but meaningfully different in conditions. Most TN16 lawns sit on a mix of greensand and clay rather than the chalk-clay border you find around Sevenoaks proper. Greensand drains faster, dries out quicker in summer, and tends to be more acidic — which favours moss and sometimes encourages the wrong species of grass to dominate. We diagnose first, treat second.

Elevation matters more in Westerham than people realise. The town centre sits at around 180 metres above sea level — Sevenoaks central is closer to 100. That's enough difference to push the spring start back by a week or two most years, and to bring frost into late April in cold seasons. We don't apply spring feed until soil temperatures are right, which the RHS recommends as around 6°C — in Westerham that's typically late March to mid-April, not early March like in lower-lying areas.

Wind exposure is the other thing that sets Westerham apart. Sitting on the ridge with the Downs to the north and open valley to the south means lawns here dry faster after rain than they do in Sevenoaks valley. That's mostly a good thing — we can often get treatments down within hours of a shower where we'd have to wait a day in town — but it also means lawns stress sooner in a dry summer. Watering deeply and infrequently beats little-and-often on these soils.

Older Westerham properties often have lawns that have been in place for generations. Mature lawns on greensand tend to develop two specific issues over time: thatch build-up that locks moisture out of the soil during dry spells, and gradual depletion of nutrients as the lighter soils leach more readily. If your Westerham lawn looks pale yellow-green rather than rich green by midsummer, the answer is usually a proper iron-based feed combined with scarification — not just more nitrogen.

Like the rest of West Kent, leatherjackets and chafer grubs are common in Westerham lawns, particularly in the older properties around the Green and the village core. Yellow patches that don't recover, soft turf, and increased bird activity (especially crows and magpies pulling at the lawn) are the giveaway signs. We can identify and treat both during regular visits — but the longer they're left, the harder the recovery.

— Local Lawn Problems —

The 4 most common Westerham lawn problems — and how we fix them

1
Pale, washed-out colour
Greensand soils leach nutrients faster than heavier clay or loam. The result is lawns that look paler — washed out yellow-green rather than rich green — by midsummer. The fix isn't more nitrogen (which makes the lawn grow fast but doesn't restore colour). It's a proper iron-based feed combined with checking soil acidity. Our Premium and Elite plans include both.
2
Moss in spring
Greensand tends to be slightly acidic, which moss loves. Add the wind exposure on the Westerham ridge that keeps lawns drying out in summer (then waterlogging in winter) and you've got ideal conditions for moss to take over. We treat the moss with proper iron-based products and address the soil chemistry — without sorting the underlying acidity, you'll be fighting moss every spring.
3
Drought stress in summer
Westerham's exposed ridge position and free-draining greensand means lawns dry out faster than in valley towns. By late July, you'll often see yellowing in the most exposed parts of the lawn, particularly south-facing slopes. Watering helps, but the long-term fix is improving the soil's water-holding capacity through topdressing with organic matter — included in our Elite plan.
4
Thin patches under foot traffic
Even though greensand drains better than clay, foot traffic still creates compaction, particularly in the top inch or two of soil where most grass roots live. Combined with the leaching that already weakens roots on these soils, traffic areas can develop thin or bare patches surprisingly fast. Aeration once a year is usually all it takes to prevent this — fixing it after the fact takes longer.

— COMMON QUESTIONS —

Lawn care Westerham — frequently asked

How much does lawn care cost in Westerham?
Lawn care plans in Westerham start at £24 per month for our Basic plan, £38 for Premium, and £72 for Elite. Pricing is based on standard lawn sizes — for larger gardens or estate properties (which are common around Westerham), we provide a bespoke quote after a free site visit.
Howw is lawn care different from lawn mowing?
Lawn mowing is regular cutting and edging — it keeps a healthy lawn looking neat. Lawn care is the underlying programme that makes the lawn healthy: feeding, weed and moss control, scarification, aeration, and treating problems like bare patches or yellowing. Most properly maintained lawns need both.
Why does my Westerham lawn always have moss?
Westerham lawns sit on greensand soils that tend to be slightly acidic — and moss thrives in acidic conditions. Combine that with the ridge wind that dries lawns out in summer (then leaves them waterlogged in winter) and you've got moss-friendly conditions all year round. Killing the visible moss is the easy part — preventing it coming back means addressing soil acidity and improving drainage.
When is the best time to start a lawn care plan in Westerham?
Anytime is fine, but Westerham's higher elevation and ridge position mean spring (late March to May) is when most plans naturally start — the season starts a week or two later here than in valley towns. Autumn (September to October) is the second-best time, especially if your lawn needs scarification or overseeding.
What's the difference between scarification and aeration?
Scarification removes thatch and moss from the surface — pulled out by mechanical rakes. Aeration relieves compaction by punching small holes through the lawn into the soil below, allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots. Most Westerham lawns benefit from both at least once a year.
Why does my Westerham lawn look pale in summer?
Greensand soils — common across TN16 — leach nutrients faster than heavier clay or loam. By midsummer, even well-fed lawns can look paler and yellower than expected. The fix is usually an iron-based feed (which restores colour without forcing growth) combined with checking soil pH. Our Premium and Elite plans include both.
Do you cover the villages around Westerham?
Yes — we cover the full TN16 postcode plus surrounding TN8, TN14, and BR6 villages. That includes Westerham Hill, Brasted, Sundridge, Crockham Hill, Ide Hill, Tatsfield, Biggin Hill, Limpsfield, Edenbridge, Four Elms, Toys Hill, Knockholt, and Halstead among others.
Can I just have one-off treatments instead of a plan?
Yes — many customers start with a one-off scarification, aeration, or rescue treatment to see results, then move to a plan. One-off visits are priced higher than equivalent treatments within a plan, but it's a good way to test whether you trust us before committing.
