— EVERY MOWING VISIT —

What's included in every visit

Lawn cut to the correct height

The blade goes up in summer heat, never scalped. In an Orpington summer with the heavy London Clay common across BR5 and BR6, scalping is one of the fastest ways to stress a lawn. We mow to leave the grass strong, not just short.

Edges re-cut to a sharp line

Every visit, not just the first. Clean edges are what separate a looked-after lawn from one that's just been mowed. We use proper edging shears, not a strimmer flail.

Clippings collected and removed

We collect every clipping and take it away. Your lawn isn't left with rows of cut grass to rot into thatch, and your patio isn't covered in green dust.

Paths and patio blown clear

We blow down all hard surfaces after the cut — driveway, paths, patio, decking. The garden is left ready to use, not ready for sweeping.

- LOCAL EXPERTISE -

Why Orpington lawns need specific care

Orpington sits in the London Borough of Bromley, on the southern edge where the city meets the North Downs. Most of the residential housing stock in BR5 and BR6 was built in the 1920s and 30s — Old Saints Church on the High Street has been on the same site since Saxon times, but the lawns came with the suburban expansion. The soil under those mature gardens is predominantly London Clay: heavy, slow-draining in winter, prone to baking hard and cracking through summer dry spells. We mow according to what's underneath, not just what's on top.

Orpington's microclimate is meaningfully different from the towns just to the south. Sitting closer to the London urban heat island, winters here are milder and the growing season tends to start a week or two earlier than in Sevenoaks or Westerham — most years, lawns in Petts Wood, Crofton, and central Orpington are growing actively by mid-March. We start the regular mowing run as soon as the soil's properly warm, which the RHS recommends as around 6°C. Cutting too early stresses grass that hasn't woken up yet.

Older Orpington gardens come with their own challenge: mature trees. Decades of growth means many BR5 and BR6 lawns sit under significant canopy — established oaks, sycamores, and hornbeams that compete with the grass for light, water, and nutrients. We raise the blade higher on shaded sections, never scalp under trees, and recommend leaving longer grass under canopy through the height of summer to give the lawn a fighting chance against root competition.

London Clay also brings drainage issues. Lawns that sit waterlogged through winter often develop compacted, mossy patches by spring. Leatherjackets and chafer grubs are common across Bromley borough too, particularly in lawns that haven't been scarified for a few seasons. If we spot signs — yellowing patches, soft turf, increased bird activity — we'll flag it during a visit and recommend treatment before it spreads.

If you've inherited a tired lawn from a previous owner, or one that's been compacted by years of foot traffic on heavy clay, we offer scarification, aeration, top-dressing and full lawn renovation as well as regular mowing. The same crew handles everything — we don't subcontract.

FAQ's

How much does lawn mowing cost in Orpington
Lawn mowing in Sevenoaks typically starts at £25 per visit for small gardens (under 50m²) and goes up to £70+ for very large lawns over 300m². Pricing depends on lawn size, access, and how often we visit. We provide a confirmed quote within 48 hours of your enquiry.
What happens if it's raining on my scheduled day?
Light rain doesn't stop us, but heavy rain or waterlogged ground does — mowing wet grass damages the lawn and the machine. If we have to skip a visit, we'll text you the day before to let you know and reschedule for the earliest dry day.
Do you offer one-off lawn cuts or only regular schedules?
Both. We do regular fortnightly and weekly maintenance, monthly tidy-up cuts, and one-off cuts for properties being sold, returning from holiday lets, or just needing a reset. One-off cuts are priced slightly higher than regular schedules to reflect the extra time involved when a lawn hasn't been kept on top of.
When should I start mowing my lawn after winter in Orpington?
Most years, the first proper cut in Orpington happens between mid-March and early April, once the soil temperature reaches around 6°C and the grass has visibly started growing. Orpington's microclimate, slightly milder than the Kent towns to the south, means the season often starts a week or two earlier than in Sevenoaks. Cutting too early — when the grass is still dormant and the ground is wet — does more harm than good. We watch the weather and start the schedule when conditions are right.
Are you insured?
Keltic Grounds Co. carries full public liability insurance and employers' liability insurance. We can provide proof of cover before any first visit if you'd like to see it.
Do I need to be home when you mow?
No. The vast majority of our Orpington customers aren't in when we visit. We just need access to the lawn — usually a side gate or shared driveway. If gates are locked, we'll arrange a code or a key arrangement that suits you.
