— EVERY MOWING VISIT —

What's included in every visit

Lawn cut to the correct height

The blade goes up in summer heat, never scalped. In a Westerham summer on the exposed Greensand Ridge, lawns dry out faster than in the surrounding valleys — scalping is one of the quickest ways to stress already-dry grass. We mow to leave the lawn strong, not just short.

Edges re-cut to a sharp line

Every visit, not just the first. Clean edges are what separate a looked-after lawn from one that's just been mowed. We use proper edging shears, not a strimmer flail.

Clippings collected and removed

We collect every clipping and take it away. Your lawn isn't left with rows of cut grass to rot into thatch, and your patio isn't covered in green dust.

Paths and patio blown clear

We blow down all hard surfaces after the cut — driveway, paths, patio, decking. The garden is left ready to use, not ready for sweeping.

- LOCAL EXPERTISE -

Why Westerham Lawns Need Specific Care

Westerham sits on the Greensand Ridge, six miles north-west of Sevenoaks but meaningfully different in character. The town centre is higher, more exposed, and closer to the Surrey border — most lawns in TN16 sit on a mix of greensand and clay rather than the chalk-clay border you find around Sevenoaks proper. Greensand drains faster, dries out quicker in summer, and tends to be more acidic, which favours moss and sometimes encourages the wrong species of grass to dominate. We mow according to what's actually underneath, not just what's on top.Elevation matters more in Westerham than people realise. The town centre sits at around 180 metres above sea level — Sevenoaks central is closer to 100.

That's enough difference to push the spring start back by a week or two most years, and to bring frost into late April in cold seasons. We don't start the regular mowing run until the soil's properly warm, which the RHS recommends as around 6°C. In Westerham that's typically late March to mid-April, depending on the year.Wind exposure is the other thing that sets Westerham apart. Sitting on the ridge with the Downs to the north and open valley to the south means lawns here dry faster after rain than they do in Sevenoaks valley. That's mostly a good thing — we can often mow within hours of a shower where we'd have to wait a day in town — but it also means lawns can stress sooner in a dry summer. We raise the blade earlier in July and August on Westerham gardens than we would on lower-lying ones, and recommend leaving cuttings to mulch back during proper drought weeks rather than collecting them.Older Westerham properties — and there are plenty of them, especially around the Green and the village core — often have lawns that have been in place for decades. Mature lawns on greensand tend to develop thatch faster than younger ones on clay, and that thatch build-up is what causes most of the moss problems we see when we first visit a Westerham garden.

If your lawn feels spongy underfoot, looks more yellow-green than rich green, or has visible moss in spring, scarification is usually the answer.Like everywhere in West Kent, leatherjackets and chafer grubs are common, particularly in lawns that haven't been treated for a few seasons. If we spot signs — yellowing patches, soft turf, increased bird activity — we'll flag it during a visit and recommend treatment before it spreads. If you've inherited a tired lawn from a previous owner, or one that's never quite recovered from a thatchy build-up, we offer scarification, aeration, top-dressing and full lawn renovation as well as regular mowing. The same crew handles everything — we don't subcontract.

FAQ's

How much does lawn mowing cost in Westerham?
Lawn mowing in Westerham typically starts at £25 per visit for small gardens (under 50m²) and goes up to £70+ for very large lawns over 300m². Pricing depends on lawn size, access, and how often we visit. We provide a confirmed quote within 48 hours of your enquiry.
How often should I mow my lawn in Westerham?
Through the main growing season (April to October), most Westerham lawns need cutting every 7–14 days. Fortnightly suits most regularly maintained lawns. Westerham's higher elevation on the Greensand Ridge means the season often starts a week or so later than Sevenoaks. Through winter, mowing usually stops from late November to early March, depending on the weather.
Do you offer one-off lawn cuts or only regular schedules?
Both. We do regular fortnightly and weekly maintenance, monthly tidy-up cuts, and one-off cuts for properties being sold, returning from holiday lets, or just needing a reset. One-off cuts are priced slightly higher than regular schedules to reflect the extra time involved when a lawn hasn't been kept on top of.
When should I start mowing my lawn after winter in Westerham?
Most years, the first proper cut in Westerham happens between late March and mid-April, once the soil temperature reaches around 6°C and the grass has visibly started growing. Westerham's higher elevation and more exposed position mean the season often starts slightly later than valley towns like Sevenoaks. Cutting too early — when the grass is still dormant and the ground is wet — does more harm than good.
Are you insured?
Yes — Keltic Grounds Co. carries full public liability insurance and employers' liability insurance. We can provide proof of cover before any first visit if you'd like to see it.
Do I need to be home when you mow?
No. The vast majority of our Westerham customers aren't in when we visit. We just need access to the lawn — usually a side gate or shared driveway. If gates are locked, we'll arrange a code or a key arrangement that suits you.
